What happens at a skin check at The Woods
Approximately 2 in 3 Australians will be diagnosed with some form of skin cancer by the age of 70. Found early, it is highly curable. A full skin check is one appointment with an accredited skin cancer doctor, and if anything needs a biopsy or removal, it is done here at the clinic.
1. Risk assessment
Your history, family history and sun exposure. Point out anything new, changing, itchy or bleeding.
2. Head-to-toe examination
Please wear comfortable clothing that is easy to remove, and avoid wearing makeup.
3. Dermoscopy
Moles and lesions of concern are examined in detail under a dermatoscope (specialised magnifying device).
4. Biopsy or imaging
If needed, a biopsy is taken on site for pathology, or images are recorded for comparison next time.
5. A clear plan
Monitor, remove or, occasionally, refer. You leave knowing when your next check is due.
What a skin check costs
Standard Out of pocket: $79.90Â whether its a short or long consult.Â
Concession Out of pocket: $43.95 – $53.40 depending on whether its a short or long consult.Â
Saturday fees differ.
A biopsy, if needed, is billed separately.

Excisions are done here by the same skin doctors, including flap and graft repairs on the face, nose and ears.
Pathology is usually fully covered by Medicare. Procedure out-of-pocket costs typically range from $120 to $600, depending on size, site and repair.
Who should book a skin check
- A new spot, or a mole that is bleeding, itching or changing
- A personal history of skin cancer, or family history of melanoma
- Anyone with multiple, large, or unusual moles that are difficult to track
- Fair skin, a lot of sun exposure, or past sunburns
- Anyone who hasn't had a skin check before but feels they need one.

Mole mapping
Mole mapping with Total Body Photography
A photographic baseline of your whole skin, so your next check is a comparison rather than a fresh start. New or changing moles stand out against the record instead of relying on memory.
We use the Canfield DermaGraphix IntelliStudio 3 system, with images reviewed by our skin GPs.
1. Imaging
Our nurses guide you through a series of standard poses while our automated unit captures high-definition photographs of your skin. (15 to 30 minutes)
2. Mapping
These images create a comprehensive digital skin map, measuring and cataloguing the moles across your body to establish your baseline.
3. Review
An Accredited Skin Cancer Doctor reviews your baseline images, flags any suspicious spots, and performs a thorough skin check using a dermatoscope. Any areas of concern are managed accordingly.
4. Comparison
During follow-up skin checks, your baseline map serves as a detailed reference point. When updated images are captured, AI-driven comparisons assist in identifying new spots or subtle variations in existing ones.
Who It’s For?
Total Body Photography is most useful for people with a higher risk of skin cancer, or anyone who finds it hard to keep track of their own moles. It may suit you if you have:
- A personal or family history of melanoma
- A moderate to large number of moles
- Unusual or atypical moles
- Difficulty monitoring your own moles at home
- High risk skin - Fair skin, a lot of sun exposure, or past sunburns
One-Off Baseline or Yearly Mapping?
Baseline Mapping: Establishes a high-definition benchmark of your skin. If you notice a spot months or years down the track, your doctor can compare it against your baseline.
Yearly Mapping: Recommended for higher-risk patients (e.g. personal/family history or many moles) to enable AI-assisted comparison over time.
Personalised Care: Your skin cancer doctor will assess your individual risk profile to advise the right monitoring plan.

Book an initial consultation first, on a separate day. It is privately billed, and you will leave with the script to buy the device from the chemist. The insertion appointment itself is then bulk billed.

Yellow Fever Vaccination
We are an accredited Yellow Fever centre providing travel assessments and valid certification. To meet international entry requirements, your vaccination must be administered at least 10 days prior to arriving in or passing through a risk area.
Travel Vaccines
We cater to all international destinations, providing itinerary-specific protection including Hepatitis A and B, Typhoid, Dengue, Japanese Encephalitis, Rabies, and more. Submitting your itinerary prior to your appointment allows us to assess your needs and pre-order any required stock. Vaccines are priced individually. Please ask reception for a quote.
Malaria and Travel Health

What things cost
We are a private billing practice. Medicare rebates are processed at reception before you leave, so the figure you actually pay is the one in the right-hand column.
Children under 12 and DVA card holders are bulk billed on weekdays, and concession rates apply. Everyone is privately billed on Saturdays. Fees current from 1 July 2026.

You may be eligible for a Bulk Billed health check
Comprehensive health assessments for eligible patients. An in depth conversation with your GP about your health, lifestyle and history, to pick up potential risks early, before symptoms appear, and leave with a plan that suits you.
Who is eligible
- Aged 45 to 49, with at least one risk factor for chronic disease: a once-off check
- Aged 75 and over: an annual comprehensive health assessment
Risk factors include high blood pressure, high cholesterol, a family history of heart disease or diabetes, smoking, diet, inactivity and alcohol. Ask us about Heart Health Checks too, generally from 45, or 30 for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

Do I need a referral for a skin check?
No. Our skin GPs are general practitioners, so you can book directly. If a specialist opinion is ever needed, we will refer you.
What should I wear to a skin check?
Comfortable clothing that is easy to remove, and no makeup. You will be asked to undress to your underwear so the doctor can check your skin from head to toe, including the places you cannot easily see yourself.
Can I book online?
Yes, through HotDoc, or call reception on (08) 9245 1912. Existing patients can also request repeat prescriptions online through HotDoc, for a fee of $31.47.
What if I need to cancel?
Please give us at least two hours notice. Late cancellations and missed appointments may incur a fee. Call (08) 9245 1912 to cancel or reschedule.
What is MyMedicare, and should I register?
MyMedicare is a voluntary patient registration model. It formalises the relationship between you, your general practice and your GP. You can download the registration form, or read who is eligible and how to register on our MyMedicare page.
